The Florida Keys stretch 120 miles from the Florida mainland to the beginning/end of highway 1 in Key West. They are a collection of Islands (keys) linked by 42 bridges that separate the Atlantic Ocean to the East and Florida Bay (the backcountry) to the west. The best part of the drive is after Marathon and 7 mile bridge where the keys become  smaller and water views more frequent. The scenery is beautiful and is sensory overload with teal waters and islands with sport fishing boats and skiffs passing under the bridges on their way to the fishing grounds. The first time I drove this I was hooked and it is permanently imbedded in my memory. On each key there are any number of local businesses such as gift shops selling shells and various Key’s memorabilia, seafood restaurants, dive shops, tackle shops, galleries, and mom and pop motels. It is fun to take your time as you drive, stopping  frequently and enjoying the view. (puts you in a proper Keys attitude) Continue reading »
