View of the Bund and River promenadeLeaving the M.S. Yangzi River Explorer in Yichang, we flew to Shanghai to begin the final leg of our trip. Shanghai was a minor river port until 1842 when the Chinese government gave in to demands from the British, French and Americans for trade concessions. These concessions became essentially foreign outposts subject only to the laws of their home country with their own police forces and judiciary. The British and American concessions were on the Huangpu River in an area now known as the “The Bund”, where all of the players in Shanghai commerce established offices and created a spectacular skyline that is still present today. This situation existed for approximately 100 years, until the relationship was ended due to growing opposition by the Chinese. Continue reading »
